The South Dakota Democratic Party establishment is having a hard time boldly advocating women’s reproductive rights. Too often, South Dakota Democrats not only keep quiet about the SDGOP’s fraudulent war on women’s equality, but also facilitate it. The South Dakota Democrats nominate a Conservative legislature for the governor who has called for overthrow Roe versus Wade, think democrats will help win elections.

But if we don’t fight for women’s reproductive autonomy – and especially right now, if we don’t mobilize against Texass’ newly enacted Senate Law 8, the radical abortion ban, vigilante justice, and similar legislative attacks on women’s constitutional rights – we are stepping down important ones Basis for electoral rights, economic justice, the rule of law, and numerous other issues that Republicans would smash in favor of their desired white supremacy of theocracy.

It’s all interrelated, says writer and activist Sikivu Hutchinson:

It is important to contextualize the attack on abortion as part of the backlash by white supremacy against voting rights, labor rights, LGBTQI + justice, climate change and secular freedoms. The Christian nationalist agenda of the Supreme Court underscores the devastating threat to public health and safety posed by white supremacy. Draconic abortion restrictions will not only further destabilize the lives of poor and colored working class women without a safety net, but they will also widen the intergenerational wealth gap in pandemic-ravaged communities.

Nationwide, the main female employees of the Black and Latinx families continue to be affected by pandemic shutdowns, downsizing and inadequate childcare. And, as many have pointed out, the Orwellian surveillance sanction, vigilance, and lawsuit against people who help with access to abortions through SB 8 will restore the backyard culture that previously existed roe.

Just as this latest SCOTUS decision exemplifies the theocratic authority of white cis men, so is the gutting of roe is a product of grassroots white patriarchal terror – the long, heinous campaign of blockades in abortion clinics, bombings, stalking and doctor murders that laid the foundation for Texas and resulted in the terrorist attack of Sept. [Sikivu Hutchinson, “The Gutting of ‘Roe’ Isn’t About Religion, It’s a Product of White Terror,†Religion Dispatches, 2021.09.14].

Democrats, we must tell the truth on all questions of power, including women’s reproductive rights. Even if you don’t have a uterus, attacking your right to have an abortion is an attack on your rights. To speak with authority on issues of equality and justice, the Democrats in South Dakota and Texas and everywhere else must nominate candidates who clearly state that women have the right to control their bodies.
