WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 (Reuters) – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio said Saturday the release of Huawei’s chief financial officer raised serious questions about President Joe Biden’s ability to meet the threat posed by the tech giant and the Chinese Communist Party.

In a text message to Reuters, Rubio urged the Biden administration to urgently inform Congress about the issue.

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou returned to China on Saturday after reaching an agreement with U.S. prosecutors on Friday to end bank fraud proceedings against them.

“Ms. Meng’s release raises serious questions about President Biden’s ability and willingness to face the threat posed by Huawei and the Chinese Communist Party,” said Rubio. “We have already seen how the government’s single-minded focus on the climate leads them to downplay the genocide. This is just another example of the Biden government’s dangerously gentle stance on Beijing.”

Meng was arrested at Vancouver International Airport on a US arrest warrant and charged with bank and wire transfer fraud in 2013 for allegedly misleading HSBC about the telecommunications equipment giant’s business relationships in Iran. She was under house arrest in Canada for more than 1,000 days.

The deal was also criticized by Republican Senator Bill Hagerty, who told Reuters it was more of a surrender to China.

“I am very concerned that this looks like it could be more appeasement from the Biden administration, more surrender,” said Hagerty, a former ambassador to Japan. “Huawei is an aggressive, predatory company. It is supported by the Chinese Communist Party.
