Hundreds of Iraqis gathered ahead of the second anniversary of the US assassination of Iranian Supreme Counterterrorism Commander General Qassem Soleimani and burned a model of the US embassy in Iraq.

General Soleimani, commander of the Quds force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and his Iraqi comrade Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of the Iraqi People’s Mobilization Units (PMU), together with their companions, launched a US drone strike in January 2020, approved by former President Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport.

On Friday, protesters gathered outside the fortified Green Zone of the capital, Baghdad, which houses diplomatic buildings, including the US embassy, to commemorate General Soleimani and al-Muhandis ahead of the second anniversary of their assassination. The demonstrators carried national flags and held up posters of General Soleimani and al-Muhandis.

They also built and burned a model of the US diplomatic mission in Iraq to express their staunch opposition to US leaders and any American presence in the Arab country.

“Today we remember the day the message of evil invaded Iraq, the message of the great devil. This American message that never does good to all countries and harms the Iraqi people. Today the Iraqis also mourn Qassem Soleimani and the heroic martyr Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who went this way, “said one protester.

The demonstration was organized by the PMU, better known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Sha’abi.

Last year, Baghdad and Washington agreed to end the presence of all US combat forces in Iraq by the end of the year.

The US military declared its combat operation in Iraq over in December, but the Resistance Forces continue to seek to evict all American forces, including those who stayed in the country on the pretext of training Iraqi troops or playing an advisory role.

Iraqi protesters also marked the second anniversary of the setting up of a security post at the US embassy by people protesting US air strikes on Friday.

The demonstrators also called for the rapid withdrawal of all American forces from Iraq.
